Getting into the swing of it…Getting into the swing of it…

Casa Rosado

Here we go, the first actual travel post by me. The kids did a pretty good job describing what we have been up to so far, but here a few more details.

We started our trip on Sunday 1st December by flying to Auckland and then over to Buenos Aires. I got lucky and got upgraded which left Jennifer and the kids in Premium Economy (we thought we start the trip with a bit of luxury, and fares were on special). This would have worked pretty good if Jannik and Jella would not have got sick on the way… but hey, I had a good sleep 😉
Anyway, after burning through any remaining brownie points on the first day – we made it to BA and headed straight into our hotel. The Jetlag was, and still is pretty bad with most of the family getting up a few times during the night and wondering what to eat or what to do. Should be fine by the end of the week though.
We went straight out again next morning to get a first glimpse of BA, and it is a beautiful but very busy city. Nice historic buildings everywhere and a good vibe all around.
The main attraction we wanted to visit, Reserva Ecologica Costanera SUR, was unfortunately closed. Puerto Madero which we passed on our way was a beautiful, modern part of BA though, and we spent most of the day cruising around the area. We all had pretty tired legs at the end of the day and went out for a pizza. Haven’t had that famous Argentinian steak as of yet, but that will come!
On our last day in BA we visited Teatro Colon and the Obelisco which was all in easy walking distance from the hotel. The day was gone pretty quick though as we only got up by about lunchtime and it was raining on top of that. Overall, big cities are not quite our thing anyway and so we decided to head straight out and bought tickets to fly to Puerto Madryn – part of Patagonia and the gateway to the Peninsula Valdez with plenty of exciting wildlife on offer. Watch this space!
Flying with FlyBondi was quite an experience very similar to the Ryanair etc. experience in Europe (small, out of way airport, chaotic scenes at checkin and people leaving the plane just before we got in) but we got there – and it was pretty cheap! We had a quick shuttle transfer to our AirBnB. That is until we had our first and hopefully last accident about 2Kms from our destination. The shuttle driver ignored (as most drivers do pretty much all the time) all road rules and a car drove into our site just below where Jannik was sitting. A good bang but nothing happened to us or anyone else. Bit of scratched metal, flat tire and ripped of front grill. They managed to get us back on track in a replacement van within 30 minutes, so all good. The kids thought it was good fun and exciting, I bet the driver disagrees after a stern talk from his boss…
